Netflix has officially greenlit a live‑action Assassin’s Creed series, and excitement is building for what’s next in the long‑running franchise. Roberto Patino and David Wiener—best known for their work on DMZ and Halo—will steer the project as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.
According to Netflix’s announcement, the series will dive deep into the age‑old conflict between the Assassins and the Templars, two shadowy factions locked in a battle to shape humanity’s future.
Patino and Wiener have teased that the show will be far more than sword fights and rooftop chases. “It’s about people searching for purpose, wrestling with identity, destiny and faith,” they said. “It’s about power, violence, sex, greed and vengeance. But more than anything, this is a story about human connection—across cultures and across time.”
That focus on emotional depth suggests a series with as much heart as spectacle.
The road to this announcement has been anything but straightforward. Netflix and Ubisoft first entered talks back in 2016, with several creative teams coming and going. Jeb Stuart, the Die Hard writer, was once attached before departing in early 2023. Since then, Patino and Wiener have been working closely with Ubisoft to shape their vision.
Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President of Scripted Series, praised the collaboration:
“When we first announced our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we set out with an ambitious goal—to bring the rich, expansive world of Assassin’s Creed to life in bold new ways. Now, after years of dedicated collaboration, it’s inspiring to see how far that vision has come.”
For now, details on which historical eras or characters will feature remain under wraps. What is clear is that this won’t simply retell the games. Ubisoft, no doubt mindful of the mixed reception to the 2016 Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender, is determined to get it right this time.
Since its debut, Assassin’s Creed has captivated players with its blend of history, intrigue and high‑stakes battles between Assassins and Templars. The upcoming Netflix series promises to explore those same themes on an even grander scale—while putting the human stories at its core front and centre.
With Patino and Wiener at the helm, this could well be the bold new chapter the Brotherhood has been waiting for.
