James Carter Cathcart (March 8, 1954 – July 2025)

James Carter Cathcart, the legendary voice actor who gave life to some of the most iconic characters in the Pokémon universe and beyond. Fans around the world are paying tribute to a man whose performances shaped generations of childhood memories. We previously lost Rachael Lillis who voiced Misty, Jessie and others last year.

A Voice That Defined a Generation

Cathcart, informally known as Jimmy Zoppi, was a veteran of 27 years with the Pokémon franchise. He began voicing characters in the English dub of the anime in 1998, portraying Gary Oak, Ash Ketchum’s rival. From season 9 onward, he also voiced Professor Oak, Meowth, and James of Team Rocket—roles he continued to perform until his retirement in 2023 following a diagnosis of throat cancer.

Beyond these iconic characters, Cathcart lent his voice to numerous other minor characters in the Pokémon series throughout the 2000s and 2010s, becoming an integral part of the franchise’s English-language identity.

Career Beyond Pokémon

While best known for his work on Pokémon, James Carter Cathcart was a prolific voice actor across anime and animation. His other notable roles included:

  • Weevil Underwood and Lumis in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters
  • Sir Gallant and Chef Nagoya in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!
  • Butchie in One Piece
  • Vector the Crocodile in Sonic X

In addition to his voice work, Cathcart also contributed as a script adaptor and voice director, helping to bring Japanese anime to English-speaking audiences with heart and authenticity.

Music and Personal Life

Cathcart’s talents extended far beyond the recording booth. He was a lifelong musician, playing guitar and performing vocals in the American rock band The Laughing Dogs. Since 1981, he also led his own group, The Carter Cathcart Band. Music remained a lifelong passion alongside his voice acting career.

Health, Retirement, and Tributes

In January 2023, Cathcart was diagnosed with an aggressive form of throat cancer. He announced his retirement later that year to focus on his treatment and health. Despite courageous efforts, he passed away in July 2025 at the age of 71.

The news of his passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues alike. Fellow Pokémon voice actor Erica Schroeder shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, calling him the “Master of the pen, piano and microphone. Friend to many. Loving father and husband.”

Cathcart’s colleagues praised not only his immense talent but also his kindness, humour, and passion for his craft.
